Analysis and Appreciation of Turgenev's Prose and Novels by Lien-te Hung, Taipei: Wu-Nan Book Inc., Dec 2019.

                           Preface to the Second Edition

It has been two years since the first edition of this book was published in January 2017. It was used by me as the textbook for the new general education course of "Analysis and Appreciation of Turgenev's Prose and Novels" at National Chiao Tung University (NCTU). This new course has been run four times so far, and will be taught the fifth time next semester. Generally speaking, it is well-received by students. The NCTU Center for Continuing Education also lists the lectures as an open program, and will release the videos and audio tapes to the public for reference by people outside the university.

Those who read, commented and praised this book are the following friends: Academic Sinica academician Paul Li, retired grand justice Senmiao Sun, justice Sai-ying Yeh, former director of the Department of Sociology of National Taiwan University professor Rui-sui Lin, professors Mei-lan Hung and Pai-ku Wei of the  Graduate Institute of Russian Studies at National Chengchi University, and the painters and poets Su-chen Shao and Mei-ling Kuo. In addition, Ms. Nai-hui He, editor in chief of the Park Life Magazine of the Hsinchu Science Park, wrote comments on the publication (the article was included in Profound and Creative Thinking: Professor Lien-te Hun's 80 Years Old Celebration Anthology (June 2018, Wu-Nan Edition), edited by Cheng-feng Shih. I would like to express my highest respect and thanks to all the above-mentioned friends for their encouragement.

I published a new book almost every year during my seven years of teaching (2012-19) at National Chiao Tung University, which has attracted the attention of the school authorities. Therefore, on the recommendation of President Mau-Chung Frank Chang, Vice President Hsin-hung Chen, Director of Student Affairs Mei-ling Huang, as well as several academic predecessors and colleagues of the Center for General Education, the Faculty Evaluation Committee in mid-June this year unanimously approved my appointment as the tenured professorial chair of NCTU. This honor is the pinnacle of my teaching career, and it is greatly appreciated and cherished. With the publication of the second edition of this book, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to internal and external staff. I hope I could devote the rest of my life to the university with whatever I could still offer.

Finally, I would like to express my great admiration and sincere gratitude to Wu-Nan Book Inc. vice president Ching-fen Liu and executive editor Ms. Kao, who have made great efforts for the republication of this book. I wish them all the best in their work and health.
